Password Changer from Dashlane is here: change all your passwords in seconds
The subscription-based password management service, Dashlane Inc., yesterday announced the acquisition of PassOmatic Inc., a startup that has created automatic password change technology. This acquisition has allowed them to announce the release of a beta version of Dashlane, which will incorporate this technology allowing you to change all your passwords with a single click.
The feature, aptly named Password Changer, will allow you to change your passwords on over 70 major websites, including Amazon, Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, PayPal, Pinterest, Skype and Twitter. If you have two-factor authentication enabled on any of the sites, a pop-up will prompt you for a code or answer to a security question.
In April this year, Heartbleed, a vulnerability in the OpenSSL security protocol affected tens of millions of servers around the world. Emmanuel Schalit, CEO of Dashlane says, “Password Changer is an antidote for future Heartbleeds.” The app will provide users with a “highly effective way to stay safe from increasingly common security breaches.”
The company is currently working on a mobile version, but for now the Password Changer feature will work on PC’s and Macs. Eventually Dashlane plans to also incorporate a feature that will enable you to set regular intervals for when passwords should automatically be updated.
If you are using a single device then Dashlane is available for free, however, syncing of additional devices will cost $39.99 annually.
Not to be left out, LastPass, a competitor of Dashlane, has also announced the incorporation of automatic password change technology into their service. The feature, called Auto-Password Change, can change your passwords automatically on over 75 sites including Home Depot, Amazon, Twitter and more.
The feature has been released for all users on Chrome, Safari, and Firefox (starting with version 3.1.70).
With the emergence of bugs like Heartbleed, and various others, it is important to incorporate a password management system onto your devices. Whether you choose Dashlane, LastPass or 1Password, it is imperative that you take control of your passwords.
