Twitch.tv will be hosting its own convention in September: TwitchCon
Popular video game livestreaming service Twitch.tv has announced that it will be hosting its first ever convention later this year. TwitchCon will take place at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco, California, on September 25-26.
“One thing we do want to hear from you is, what do you guys want?” said Marcus “djWHEAT” Graham, the host of Twitch Weekly. “We’ve got ideas coming out of our brains, but we obviously can’t wait to hear what you guys want out of something like a TwitchCon.”
Graham invited Twitch users to send in their suggestions for what they want to see at TwitchCon via chat, email, or social media. While a convention for gaming’s biggest streaming service will attract the attention of big name game developers, the site is billing the convention as an opportunity for fans and streamers to interact.
“Play and learn together”
“Twitch broadcasters have the most passionate fans, so we want to create an amazing experience where they can come together in person,” said Twitch CEO Emmett Shear. “TwitchCon will be an opportunity for the entire community — broadcasters, game developers, viewers, and us — to play and learn together.”
Twitch has become increasingly popular with gamers, and last year, Amazon.com Inc purchased the livestreaming site for $970 million. The site currently sees around 100 million viewers each month with more than 1.5 million broadcasters livestreaming their games. The broadcasters included everyone from amateur players being watched by a handful of friends to high stakes gaming tournaments with close to 200,000 viewers at once.
Some of the most popular games on the site are well known esports titles and include games such as League of Legends, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Dota2, and StarCraft II. But several livestreams can be found for nearly any game, from the most recent hot titles to older gaming classics such as Pokemon Red/Blue or Super Mario 64.
Details on TwitchCon are light at the moment, but more information will be released in the coming months leading up to the convention. You can watch for news of the event or sign up for updates at TwitchCon.com.
