OpenFeint On Android Brings Social Games, Marketing and Revenue

Today, OpenFeint, a social gaming platform, has finally released the long-awaited Android version.  Here are some of the reported features of the android version of OpenFeint:

For now, OpenFeint for Android will offer leaderboards, achievements, friend lists and social discovery, with challenges, synchronous play, cross-platform play and real-time voice chat coming later this year. However, Citron still doesn’t think that Android is the perfect platform, so Aurora Feint will also be putting effort into promoting specific developers and apps.

First announced several weeks ago, OpenFeint’s Android support didn’t come without its own set of bumps in the road.  Now that the Android platform has proven itself as a viable market for serious gamers, larger developers are taking notice.  It’s been a long time coming, but the presence of OpenFeint is encouraging of the Android gaming industry as a whole.

Additional support is of course coming from Google itself, with a string of investments and acquisitions around the gaming, mobile and virtual currency realms.  From a platform perspective, OpenFeint is garnering a number of alternatives for Google Android or iOS, utilizing a similar method that many applied towards Facebook’s platform.

As with most, we’ll see how the marketplace plays out, and who will attempt to take the biggest chunk of Android’s in particular, Google included.

As OpenFeint will be able to take advantage of the many platforms available, the ongoing development of cross-platform capabilities will help drive the gaming industry further.  Social gams in particular is one major area of focus, especially with Apple’s recent announcement of multiplayer, live gaming support.
