Big Data infrastructure firm BlueData Software Inc. has said it’s adding support for Docker containers on its BlueData EPIC platform.
The move means that organizations will be able to deploy popular Big Data tools like Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark quickly and easily in a lightweight container environment.
“Container technology is disrupting the IT market, and Docker is seeing rapid enterprise adoption,” Kumar Sreekanti, co-founder and CEO of BlueData, said. “There are now thousands of applications running on Docker, but until today there were only a few applications supporting containers for Big Data analytics. Together with Docker, we’re disrupting the Big Data market and leveraging the power of containers for enterprises deploying Hadoop and Spark on-premises”.
According to BlueData, the ability to deploy Hadoop and Spark into a container environment gives organizations the ability to streamline their infrastructure deployment. By integrating Docker with EPIC, BlueData delivers the benefits of virtualization to Big Data applications, together with the simplicity of containers and the performance of bare-metal servers.
BlueData EPIC is compatible with Spark and all the major Hadoop distributions, the company said. It can also integrate with many popular Big Data analytical tools, meaning organizations can use the solutions they’re familiar with to extract insights from their data. BlueData EPIC also works with any kind of shared storage environment, which means there’s no need to move data beforehand. Finally, the platform delivers the same agility as Hadoop-as-a-Service to an on-premises deployment model, while ensuring the enterprise-grade security and governance that numerous industries require.
BlueData’s EPIC Lite platform with support for Docker is available now as a free download, allowing data scientists and developers to easily build multi-node Hadoop clusters or standalone Spark clusters in a Docker container environment. The enterprise edition of BlueData Epic is set to be released later this year, the company said.
