The year of open source: A disruptive time in IT industry | #MITCDOIQ

Kicking off theCUBE’s third year of coverage of the MITCDOIQ Symposium, Wikibon chief analyst Dave Vellante and SiliconANGLE enterprise editor Paul Gillin discuss how the role of the CIO is changing due to the impact of open source on the tech industry.

“I’ve never seen a more disruptive time in the IT industry,” says Gillin. “Open source is a big factor. This last year has been the year of open source.”

CIO role evolves

Vellante sees large enterprise being forced to mobilize and outsource data to the Cloud. This means that the role of the CIO is maturing and becoming less of a tech role and much more infrastructure steward, according to Vellante.

Gillin agrees, describing the evolution of the main focus of the CIO role, from keeping the lights on to being a data management expert. As cloud management tools including Google’s Kubernetes and Apache Hadoop become mainstream, and companies such as Amazon move toward open source, “we no longer re-invent the wheel,” states Gillin. The good news from this disruption is that once enterprise makes the transition, they “will be more sustainable and ultimately more profitable.”

Coverage of MITCDOIQ Symposium 2015 continues on theCUBE. Upcoming interviews include:

  • Alex “Sandy” Pentland, director, MIT Media Lab Entrepreneurship Program;
  • Mykola Hayvanovych, global director of Data Science, Intel;
  • Dr. Richard Wang, director, MIT Chief Data Officer & Information Quality Program;
  • Michael Stonebraker, professor, MIT.
