Paradox outlines features for upcoming ‘Cities: Skylines’ expansion

Swedish game studio Paradox Interactive surprised everyone with the outstanding success of its city builder sandbox game Cities: Skylines, which sold over 1 million copies in its first month of release. Now the Stockholm-based developer has revealed more details about the game’s highly anticipated first expansion, After Dark, which was announced at Gamescom last month.

“To add more depth into gameplay, After Dark has some of the old city services expanded and tweaked,” Paradox said in a dev diary post on its forums. “Mostly these modifications were based on user feedback and on things that we noticed the users were doing but were not handled as elegantly as possible by the game.”

Here’s a breakdown of some of the features being changed or added.

Police

One change being made is the way crime works in the game, which Paradox says was a little too easy in the base game.

“We noticed at some point that crime rate always stayed very low and it was almost impossible to get it to rise,” Paradox said. “This was caused by crime sate being linked with citizen happiness. Basically before many citizens were unhappy enough to turn to crime, they moved out of the city or got sick due to low health resulting from the conditions causing the low happiness.”

As a result, Paradox has altered the way crime logic works in-game to make crimes rates rise more easily and fluctuate more often. The studio will also be adding prisons, a building type players can use to combat overcrowding in police stations.

Public transport

Public transportation will be getting new buildings and features, allowing players to create more efficient line transfers.

This includes a new bus station building, which allows multiple busses to stop without obstructing traffic, as well as making it easy for passengers to switch lines within the building without being forced to cross streets. Paradox says this give public transport and traffic “a better flow.”

Cargo hub

The cargo hub will be a new building that will alleviate traffic issues caused by trucks transporting freight from train stations to harbors. The building will allow trains to deliver goods directly to the harbors now, eliminating that road clogging line of trucks that streamed between the two points previously.

Taxi cabs

In addition to the new bus station buildings, After Dark will also be adding a taxi cab system aimed at servicing tourists.

“The taxi service is a new service that allows tourists and citizens to order taxis to take them to their destination,” Paradox said. “Basically taxis work a lot like private cars, but with difference of taxis residing in a depot and using stands to wait for new customers. Taxis especially help tourists to get around the city easier and thus make them stay longer in the city, generating more tax income.”

International airport

Lastly is the addition of an international airport, a large version of the standard airport building that will greatly improve the efficiency of transportation in a city.

“Not only is it the largest building in the whole game, it also has a hidden surprise: an integrated metro station,” Paradox said. “No more long lines of cars or crowds walking to public transportation stops next to the airport, you can offer your citizens an easy way to arrive and depart the airport by connecting the built-in metro station to a metro network.”
