7 tips to get the most out of iOS 9 on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Apple released iOS 9 to the general public yesterday. If you’ve updated your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 9 (or even if you’re still thinking about it), we’ve got seven tips to help you get the most out of iOS 9.
Some of these new features in iOS 9 work just on the iPad, while others apply to the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
iOS 9 multitasking features for iPad
Slide Over in iOS 9 on iPad
Slide Over allows you to view two apps simultaneously on your iPad screen. The second app appears in a sidebar window that takes up one-third of the screen while the first app stays open in the background (greyed out).
How to use Slide Over in iOS 9 on iPad
- Tap in the middle of the right side of your iPad screen and swipe to the left.
- A selection of apps, including Safari, Maps, Photos, Calendar, and other native iOS apps will load in a sidebar window.
- Tap to launch the app you want to use. Your first app will stay open in the background.
- Go back to your first app by tapping on it or close the second app by swiping the Slide Over sidebar to the right.
Split view in iOS 9 on iPad
Split View (only available on the iPad Air 2, upcoming iPad mini 4 and iPad Pro) works like Slide Over, but allows you to use both apps at the same time.
How to use Split View in iOS 9 on iPad
- Open your first app.
- Launch Slide Over in the steps above.
- Select your second app.
- Pull the sidebar to the left by dragging the vertical line. This places the two apps into Split View.
- Adjust the app window size by dragging the vertical line left or right. You can split the screen 70/30 or 50/50.
- Switch between apps or even copy/paste text from one app to another.
Picture in Picture in iOS 9 on iPad
Picture in Picture lets you view a video in a resizable and movable window on your home screen or in another app.
How to use Picture in Picture in iOS 9 on iPad
- When playing a video in Safari or an app, tap on the Picture in Picture icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the video player. This opens the video in a new window.
- Pinch or stretch the new video window to make it smaller or larger.
- Tap and hold the new video window to drag it anywhere on the iPad screen.
- Snap the video window back to its original spot by tapping the Picture in Picture icon.
- Use pause/play controls as per normal and close the new window by tapping the “X” button.

iCloud Drive app in iOS 9
With the iCloud Drive app in iOS 9, you can view and manage all the files and folders store in your iCloud Drive.
How to enable the iCloud Drive app in iOS 9
Go to Settings > iCloud > toggle the iCloud Drive switch to the on position (green).
How to rename, move or delete iCloud Drive files in iOS 9
To delete, rename, move or get more info about a file or folder, tap and hold on the folder or file in the iCloud Drive app in iOS 9.
To rename, move or delete a file, follow these steps:
- Tap and hold on a file.
- A menu with options to Delete / Rename / Info / More will show.
- Tap on Information to see the text of a file, the file’s full title, file type, size, and more.
- Tap on More to rename, share or move a file to another folder.
How to rename or delete a single folder in iCloud Drive on iOS 9
- Tap and hold on the folder.
- Tap the Delete or Rename option on the menu.
How to move or delete multiple files or folders in iCloud Drive on iOS 9
- Tap on the Select link at the top right of the iCloud Drive app. This lets you select multiple items.
- Tap all the files or folders you want to move or delete to select them.
- To move the files or folders, tap on the Move link at the bottom of the iCloud Drive app. To delete the files or folders, tap on the Delete link at the bottom of the iCloud Drive app.
- Here you also have the option of creating a new folder if the folder you want to move items to does not exist yet.

New Search screen in iOS 9
In iOS 9, the Search screen is back to the left of the Home screen – simply swipe to the right in iOS 9 to bring up the new Search screen.
Search now also includes Siri suggestions for Contacts, Apps, Locations and News. If you don’t want the Siri suggestions in Search, you can disable them.
To disable Siri suggestions in iOS 9 Search, got to Settings > General > Spotlight Search > toggle Siri Suggestions off.
Not everybody will appreciate Siri Suggestions on their search screen. If you’re one of those folks, don’t worry. You can easily turn off Siri Suggestions in iOS 9.
Low Power Mode in iOS 9
Low Power Mode in iOS 9 is a new power management feature that extends your iPhone’s battery life by up to three hours by disabling mail fetch, automatic downloads, background app refresh, and throttles the CPU performance.
How to manually enable Low Power Mode in iOS 9
Enable Low Power Mode in iOS 9 at any battery level by following these steps:
- Tap on Settings.
- Tap on Battery (below Touch ID & Passcode).
- Tap on the Low Power Mode switch to toggle it on (turns green).
With Low Power Mode enabled you’ll note that the battery icon in the top right corner of your iPhone’s screen is now a yellow color.

New grey background in Safari Reader in iOS 9
iOS 9 adds a new grey background option to Safari Reader, displaying white text on a grey background. Perfect for when you don’t want your screen to bother those around you in low-light settings.
To switch to a grey background in Safari Reader in iOS 9, open Safari > got to a Web page > tap the Reader button on the left > tap the font button on the right to pull up the font and color menu > tap on the grey color option between Sepia and Black.
