As the cloud becomes mainstream, cybercriminals have more to target. In its newly released Fall 2015 Cloud Security Report, Security-as-a-Service provider Alert Logic, Inc. reported that cyberattack methods aimed at cloud deployments grew by up to 45 percent. However, there was no increase in attacks against on-premises deployments.
During Amazon re:Invent 2015 in Las Vegas, Misha Govshteyn, cofounder and CSO of Alert Logic, told John Furrier and Brian Gracely, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, that break-ins are actually starting to decrease as the level of control increases.
Yet, security remains an important issue for the cloud ecosystem. Govshteyn said that over the past year, he has noticed more enterprise companies adopting Amazon solutions and security. Alert Logic also receives more calls from IT departments. “Our customers early on were developers,” he said. “Over the past couple years, enterprise IT people started reaching out to us. They want a secure compute environment. This shows that security becoming much more standardized.”
Alert Logic partners with Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) to offer its customers cloud-based security. “Amazon is closely aligned with our delivery model,” saidGovshteyn. “The provider owns the delivery. We do the same with security. That’s why many Amazon customers choose us.”
Regarding customer use cases, Govshteyn said it’s the legacy companies, not the startups, that most inspire. “Some 100-year-old companies innovate very fast, sometimes faster than startups,” he said. “[General Electric] is a fascinating story. They use the cloud for virtually everything. The playing field is becoming more level, and overall, everyone wins.”
