During OpenStack Innovation Day Seattle 2015, Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation, committed to help the enterprise gain more value from OpenStack. With that in mind, Mark McLoughlin, director at OpenStack Foundation and OpenStack technical director at Red Hat, Inc., talked with John Furrier, cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, about the ongoing effort to increase adoption of OpenStack by the enterprise.
McLoughlin was impressed with the customer use case that OpenStack customer FICO presented. “FICO is running OpenShift on remo-xp with SEF on Cisco gear. It is great to hear our customers talk about how successful they’ve been and about the business value they get from OpenStack,” he said.
Going on to discuss his excitement with the deep technical discussion by an EBay representative during the event, who talked about integrating Kubernetes with OpenStack, McLoughlin noted that as a technician he found the talk to be full of interesting detail.
When asked about increasing adoption of OpenStack, McLoughlin acknowledged that the open-source cloud computing platform still has some drawbacks when it comes to deploying, operating and upgrading. He said that the team is working hard to address problems.
“We’ve built an amazing ecosystem at OpenStack. People are consuming OpenStack or deploying OpenStack from the DIY, running a trunk to completely running managed services in a different data center,” according to McLoughlin.
As the enterprise begins to re-architect its technology, McLoughlin explained that it is a culture challenge and each customer is fundamentally changing how they run their business. He sees many different methods from what he calls a “Big Bang” effort beginning with the CIO to small insulated teams building core competencies. He enjoys working with the full spectrum and is impressed with the visionaries he comes across in the marketplace.
