iOS 9 tips and tricks: How to enable Watchtower in 1Password for additional security

1Password is a great way to avoid the hassle of trying to remember your passwords for multiple sites or the struggle of coming up with a unique, strong password when you need a new one. To provide iOS users with additional security, AgileBits, the developers behind 1Password, have included its Watchtower feature in the latest update of the app.

What is Watchtower?

Watchtower, which had previously only been available through the company’s website and Mac app, will monitor the various security vulnerabilities across the web. If it comes across a vulnerability on one of the sites that you use, it will alert you if you need to update your password. As Watchtower is an opt-in feature, you will need to enable it on your iOS device to ensure you receive the additional security that it offers.

How to enable Watchtower on iOS

  1. Download the latest free version of 1Password (version 6.2.1) from the iTunes store.
  2. Open the 1Password app
  3. Tap on Settings > Security > enable 1Password Watchtower by sliding the toggle to the on position.

Once you have enabled the Watchtower feature on your iOS device, a red banner will display under the sites name if 1Password finds — or receives a report of — a possible security risk for a particular site. The red banner alert will disappear once you update your password.

The 1Password iOS app is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, running iOS 9.0 or later. You can also use 1Password on your Apple Watch, but this will entail an In-App Purchase for the Pro version of 1Password.
