Microsoft piles more dev tools into Azure Stack

It was only last month that Microsoft launched its Azure Stack cloud-in-a-box system, but already the company has pushed out a major update featuring several new tools for its code base.

Microsoft built Azure Stack with larger enterprises in mind, giving them a new option to run a hybrid cloud system with Azure’s capabilities hosted in their own, on-premises servers. The idea is simple, to bring the cloud to those companies who’re wary of entrusting their data to someone else.

Now, Microsoft is making “additional Azure PaaS services and DevOps tools available for you to deploy and run on top of your Technical Preview deployments,” it said in a blog post. “This represents the first installment of continuous innovation towards helping you deliver Azure services from your data center.”

Some of the new code includes tools aimed at developers, giving them the ability to run SQL and MySQL resource providers on Azure Stack, which should make the platform more appealing to database users. However, developers be warned that the code is still a “very early preview”.

Also new is a revised software development kit that includes cross-platform CLI and PowerShell support to Azure Stack. Developers will also gain native support for Visual Studio and new features in Web Apps.

Finally, Microsoft is adding a new selection of Azure Stack GitHub Templates, plus a bunch of workload examples to help developers get started.

The Azure Stack team’s blog post also hints at future updates to be announced at the up and coming Microsoft BUILD conference for developers in San Francisco this March.
