When Microsoft’s high-end laptop the Surface Book was reviewed last year prior to it being released to the public a number of issues were pointed out including driver crashes and bluescreens, according to reviewers. Microsoft had said that these issues would be dealt with it, although upon release the problems continued. At the same time the Surface Pro 4 had its own set of issues, prompting tech blogger Paul Thurrott to amusingly call the whole Surface affair SurfaceGate.
SurfaceGate however should be an ephemeral scandal as Microsoft is about to roll-out a number of firmware updates for both devices that should at least deal with the power and driver issues. Whether this will fix all known issues only time will tell, but the man responsible for the Surface line, Panos Panay, says he has been busy reading blogs and comments, as well as taking in complaints on social media and forums.
In a short blog post Panay said, “We love our Surface customers. You are our early adopters and our fans and you keep inspiring us with what you are able to do with Surface. You keep pushing us to make Surface even better.” He added that consumers should install all new updates and also provide feedback via Microsoft’s Surface support page. Microsoft has provided a Surface Book Update History for January and February here.
The fact that a man with as high a rank as Panay is relating updates to the public shows how much of a problem this has been for Microsoft, whose forums have been a hive of complaints since last year due to Surface problems. Problems which Panay said, “keeps us up at night”, though perhaps the Microsoft exec will be sleeping easier from now on.
