Apple has announced an update to its ultra small 12-inch MacBook laptop line with the machines getting well deserved hardware upgrades, as well as a new color.

The updated MacBook will ship with sixth-generation dual-core Intel Core M processors up to 1.3 GHz, with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.1 GHz, and faster 1866 MHz memory.

For graphics, the new MacBook’s include Intel HD Graphics 515 that is said to deliver up to 25 percent faster graphics performance that the previous model, along with faster PCIe-based flash storage which Apple says makes everyday tasks “feel snappier,” such as launching apps and opening files.

While Apple doesn’t provide specific specs, the battery has been upgraded and will now offer “up to 10 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 11 hours of iTunes movie playback,” according to the company.

The chassis on the new MacBook has not changed from the previous model, and still only ships with a single USB-C port. However, the range now has an additional color option: rose gold, bringing the color options across the product line into unison with the colors available on Apple’s iPhone.

“MacBook is the thinnest and lightest Mac we have ever made and it’s our vision for the future of the notebook,” Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller said in a statement. “Customers are going to love this update to MacBook, with the latest processors, faster graphics, faster flash storage, longer battery life and a beautiful rose gold finish.”

Faster

While the original current generation MacBooks were released in 2015 (note the name had been used in previously discontinued models) they gained strong praise, particularly for the small form factor and the fact that they are actually pretty to look at.

That said, one common criticism at the time was that they were seriously under powered; they may well have supported Apple’s productivity software but it was a case of good luck if you want to play any half decent game.

The bad news is that you’re unlikely to be able to play graphics-intensive games on the new MacBook but they are definitely faster, and while still not up to spec with Apple’s MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines, the upgrade definitely does make them more appealing.

Cost wise, the base MacBook which comes with a 1.1 GHz dual-core Intel Core m3 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 2.2 GHz, 8GB of memory and 256GB of flash storage will sell for $1,299, while the next model up ships with a 1.2 GHz dual-core Intel Core m5 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 2.7 GHz, 8GB of memory and 512GB of flash storage for $1,599.

As with the the desktop Apple computer, users are able to upgrade the device in a custom order including increased memory and a faster processor.

The new MacBooks are available now from Apple.com now, and from Apple Stores and selected Apple Resellers starting Wednesday.
