My cloud will solve everything (not!) | #emcworld
Companies considering multi-cloud environments need navigational assistance. Sean Wedige, CTO of global enterprise solutions at Rackspace Hosting, advises these companies to watch out for the promise that “my cloud can do everything for you.”
Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, who spoke with Wedige during EMC World 2016, agreed, noting that Amazon’s “sweep the floor” philosophy with its Web Services cloud platform doesn’t work for all companies.
That risk of overpromising is just one issue surrounding multicloud environments. By and large, the platforms continue to improve.
“AWS made everyone raise the bar,” said Wedige. “Some companies have done well; some have had challenges trying to evolve their capabilities to meet the demands of IT.”
The security question
When considering cloud features, there’s a lot of noise around security and whether a platform is secure. Rackspace has advanced capabilities in public and hybrid cloud that exceed what the enterprise could do in their own data center, according to Wedige.
Wedige also noted that EMC’s goal to create a seamless experience ties in with Rackspace Hosting’s offerings as a managed cloud provider.
“Customers want to know ‘what platform is right for me,’” he said. “Customers value Rackspace’s support capability, but they also want to layer that on top of an Azure, AWS or Microsoft private cloud. It’s really opened the door for us to be able to leverage our expertise to help customers navigate the cloud.”
