Anyone who has seen a DreamWorks Animation film should understand why the data center plays such a large role in production.
Every single element has to be crafted from basic composition to fine-details rendering, explained Kate Swanborg, head of Technology, Communication & Alliances at DreamWorks Animation, LLC. The studio is producing two films a year, with each film requiring around half-a-billion files. DreamWorks’ alliance with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE), facilitates this process.
Tim Peters, VP and GM of ProLiant Rack Servers at HPE, joined Swanborg for an interview with Dave Vellante (@dvellante), cohost of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during HPE Discover 2016 in Las Vegas.
Peters attributed HPE with a “maniacal focus on innovation.” He remarked that having DreamWorks as a customer is “a dream come true.” The VP seemed envious of Swanborg’s job, stating she must have “a lot of fun” at work.
Swanborg credited the success of the alliance to HPE’s “commitment to innovation” and to listening. She commented on HPE’s ability to create “business solutions that happen to be technical.” Swanborg found HPE’s future tech lab to be particularly impressive, stating HPE is “innovating in ways we aren’t thinking of.”
Peters talked about the “configuration of options” with “management capability that can allow composability.” He remarked that HPE works toward “a great understanding of what [customers] are trying to achieve.” In the case of DreamWorks, Swanborg said the company wants “the whole enchilada.”
HPE has given DreamWorks the ability to have everything “produced on the fly in real time.”
