Amazon now has its own cargo planes for Prime deliveries
Amazon has taken yet another step toward total delivery superiority with the launch of Amazon One, a new cargo plane that is dedicated to transporting Amazon Prime orders.
Debuting at the recent Seafair Air Show near Seattle, Amazon’s new plane is a massive Boeing 767-300, which according to Boeing is capable of transporting loads weighing up to 58 tons across distances of over 3,000 nautical miles in a single flight. While the plane sports Amazon’s logo, the company notes that it is actually operated by Amazon’s air delivery partner, Atlas Air.
“Creating an air transportation network is expanding our capacity to ensure great delivery speeds for our Prime members for years to come,” Dave Clark, Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide operations, said in a statement. “I cannot imagine a better way to celebrate the inaugural flight than in our hometown at Seafair alongside Amazon employees and Seattle residents.”
Amazon says that the new Amazon One is only one of 40 total planned aircraft that will be launched within the next two years. Some of the planes will be operated by Atlas Air, while others will be operated by Air Transport Services Group (ATSG). Amazon’s planes will tie in to the company’s Flex delivery network, which allows regular people to earn money by delivering Amazon goods. The company says that by expanding its fleet’s cargo capacity, it will be able to keep up with the demand for one and two-day shipping for Prime members.
As it turns out, the plane unveiled at Seafair is not Amazon’s only dedicated aircraft, and in fact the company has 10 other planes currently in operation. The new Amazon One plane is simply the first to be painted with Amazon’s brand.
