To further penetrate the mobile devices entertainment and social networking market, MySpace has updated its mobile website and iPhone applications this week. The move aims to expand and enhance entertainment experience of users every time they access MySpace via mobile phones. It is also important to know that a third of MySpace users interact within the site via mobile devices daily, making this improvement a delight to them.
Michael Jones, chief executive officer for MySpace, explained this strategy, and what they are expecting as an outcome of the implementation of the reinvention. “We have a two-pronged approach to our mobile strategy. We are creating the best experience for Myspace mobile web users by taking the most compelling entertainment elements of Myspace.com and making them portable, while simultaneously building a portfolio of independent mobile applications tailored specifically to entertainment categories. This approach allows us to offer a meaningful social entertainment experience on mobile that is both fast and engaging.”
However, there has been no Android update on this release. It could mean that MySpace is taking a staggered approach to its mobile roll out, which isn’t entirely uncommon (Facebook often staggers their mobile roll outs across platforms). But when MySpace was at its peak, it had a rather dedicated effort towards the mobile realm. As MySpace is in the middle of a reformation, a return to that level of mobile focus would do MySpace some good.
The launch of the latest of mobile website accessible to iPhone, iPod Touch, Android, Palm and select Nokia and BlackBerry devices followed a recent “facelift” by the same social networking arena. In other areas of growth and development, MySpace has acquired a gaming feature and re-launched its site with several updates and brand reconstruction.
Lastly, MySpace recently gave a huge nod to Facebook, updating its site to incorporate the Facebook “Like” button. It seemed that MySpace too, has been dancing to the tune dictated by Mark Zuckerberg’s social networking monster.
