Online Video, Games & News Take on Mobile, Personal Clouds
The app world is really kicking into high gear, with several industries seeing growth opportunities through the development and distribution of mobile applications. There are a few areas in particular that have made gains in the past year, across all major mobile platforms, but especially on Apple iOS and Android. Entertainment and gaming are two big areas of interest in the mobile app world, with online video straddling a number of mobile app categories, driving its growth as well.
We’ve seen how some of these trends are shaping up from the Millennial Media S.M.A.R.T. report series, ranking ads in the mobile app and OS markets. As expected, Apple leads with a 25% market share, improving continuously over the last 13 months since its launch. Closely following is RIM’s BlackBerry Curve, which represents a significant part of the mobile market. The laurels for the third position goes to Motorola, which previously was ranked the second, and has seen wild success from manufacturing Android devices. The shift from Droids to Android sustained and gave a new bounce to Motorola’s smart handsets, and all of the above have pushed progress through for app distribution.
The S.M.A.R.T. report also mentions the increasing demand for smartphones, reaching a 60% level of the overall market of telephones. This growth is highly connected apps development in the categories of social networking, online video and gaming. The trend is growing hand-in-hand with the spread of connected devices.
Recently, a new iPad app, for sharing HD videos has been released, demonstrating the impact of online videos. Libox‘s free iPad app provides HD media-sharing between Apple devices, in an easy and safe way. Libox supports different type of media files, from music and photos, to video. Using a Libox account ensures users to intelligently sync and stream their media files at the highest quality level. Designed especially for HD media, the iPad’s 9.7 inch resolution is perfectly suitable, and pushes several cloud developments on the personal consumer front.
Erez Pilosof, Libox founder and CEO, stressed the app’s aim on the smartohones market, saying, “With vastly simplified sharing and the new iPad app, LIBOX is taking the concept of ‘media anywhere’ to the next level. We offer a free, unlimited service, across multiple platforms to let users enjoy and easily share their full HD media collection, whenever and wherever they want.”
In fact, the iPad has received a lot of attention from apps developers lately. The publishing industry is taking advantage of the iPad for digital distribution of printed content, as Flipboard has re-launched its application, enabling users to customize the content and the layout of their favorite magazine. Being considered a “magazine metaphor,” Flipboard is following the market’s drive for online reading and entertainment and moreover, the social media’s influence over the spread of information within virtual environments.
Tablets in particular are expected to drive the API developer economy, sprouting service businesses and creating direct channels to consumers. According to Gartner, Cloud Services individually will generate almost $150 billion in coming years, primarily because they can be used in almost any application or platform on internet and are renowned for accessibility and increasing security traits.
Among media sharing, entertainment is gaining more credit from the worldwide users. This sector is seeing rising growth rates on Android, as the platform becomes more stable and condusive to game development and distribution. After huge success on Apple iOS, the popular game Pocket God has arrived on the Android Market this week, making another milestone for Google’s mobile OS.
