Cisco Systems Inc. has pulled out its checkbook for the second time in a week, announcing a deal Thursday to buy Saggezza Inc.’s advanced analytics and data science technology assets for an undisclosed fee.
The deal comes after Cisco snapped up software-defined networking startup Viptela Inc. for $610 million on Monday.
Saggezza is a privately held technology developer with offices in Chicago. Founded in 2006, the company offers a portfolio of software platforms targeted at the financial services industry, with tools for data analysis and visualization. Cisco, it seems, wants to apply the company’s advanced analytics knowhow to its own networks.
“Cisco believes that analytics will play a critical role in building the next-generation of simplified, dynamic, automated networks,” Rob Salvagno, Cisco’s vice president of corporate business development, said in a blog post announcing the deal. “Network analytics form a critical piece of Cisco’s goal to provide comprehensive, end-to-end analytics solutions that span the entire technology ecosystem—including network, cloud, data center, security, applications and business processes.”
Salvagno explained that Saggezza’s Advanced Analytics team has “unique capabilities in cloud and secure platform development,” and will be able to bolster Cisco’s “ongoing innovation” there. Saggezza’s Advanced Analytics team will hook up with Cisco’s Enterprise Networking Engineering Group, which is led by Senior Vice President Ravi Chandrasekaran. The deal is set to close by the end of Cisco’s fiscal fourth quarter.
Cisco has been busy in the analytics market. In January, the company swooped to buy application analytics firm AppDynamics Inc. in a $3.7 billion deal, just before its initial public offering. Then in February, Cisco updated its Tetration Analytics software with new cloud capabilities that should make the product more appealing to data center customers. Tetration Analytics is an analytics package that gathers information from hardware and software sensors and analyzes the information using big data and machine learning.
Cisco has also teamed up with IBM Corp. to develop analytics services for the Internet of Things.
