Why NetApp is shifting focus to hybrid cloud

The transition to a new age of computing is creating a lot of excitement in the industry, especially as so-called legacy companies make the shift to the new way of doing business. NetApp Inc., one of the traditional players in data storage, is expanding its product offerings to deliver more value to its customers in the changing landscape, according to RJ Bibby (pictured), SAP SE global alliance, business development executive, at NetApp.

“The world is going through a digital transformation, and so is NetApp. We’ve been a traditional global technology and data management company, and the digital shift to hybrid cloud is where we’re moving,” Bibby said.

John Furrier (@furrier), co-host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, spoke to Bibby during SAP’s Sapphire Now conference in Orlando, Florida, about his company’s transition to a new business model.

Building a data management portfolio

Bibby’s vision for NetApp moving forward is to expand the company’s portfolio around data management.

“We are changing the landscape from true storage company on the infrastructure side to a full end-to-end hybrid cloud data management portfolio,” Bibby explained.

He provided some examples of NetApp adding more capabilities around data management. “It’s been proven by the acquisition of SolidFire bringing flash into the portfolio … cloning and snapshot capabilities, so anywhere in the stack at anytime during the day, when you’re looking live at the operations of your data, you can take live snapshots,” Bibby said.

These portfolio additions align with NetApp’s long-term goal of defining the way data is consumed.

“One thing of value that we bring to SAP are the consumption model licenses. Through owning the data and user experience, we’re able to enable the license consumption to the edge from application into the system,” Bibby concluded.
