Millennial Media Releases an SDK for Windows Phone 7 Developers

Millennial Media today announced it has officially released its Windows Phone 7 SDK. This enables marketers utilizing the network to tap into the Windows Phone 7 market, and develop their campaigns around the device, but more specifically, this new SDK provides more integration with mobile applications.

“Although we have been providing monetization services for current Windows Mobile developers, we have now extended a toolkit for developers to much more easily integrate ads into their applications, while providing rich and engaging experiences to the advertisers across all Windows Phone 7 Applications.”

According to Millennial the Windows Phone 7 SDK strives to deliver the same benefits the Android and iOS platforms SDKs do. That may just be the case, with features including full Silverlight and XNA SDK, rich set up development tools for flexible ad insertion and seamless integration, full Rich Media Support for Silverlight, interactive ad units for large scale marketers, interstitial ad support for Silverlight applications and more.

Millennial Media’s expansive mobile ad network grants a rare look into some interesting targeting behavior on supported platforms, which are ultimately changing the way software is distributed and monetized.  The move to Windows Phone 7 is an expected one for a network as large as Millennial, but some stats on publisher expectations around the platform further validate the company’s decision to extend an SDK.  Late last year, Millennial surveyed publishers to get an idea of their mobile app plans for 2011.  Windows Phone 7 tied at second place with the iPad for platforms publishers plan to support this year, taking 20% of the market share, just behind Android’s nearly 30%.

There’s increasing support for Windows Phone 7, as the platform and its marketplace experience more and more growth. In addition to Millennial’s recently launched SDK the Amazon Kindle is another recent member of this growing support list.

Despite Windows Phone 7’s growth, Apple is still dominating the mobile scene, from the manufacturing standpoint. A recent Millennial Media report uncovered the iPhone and iPod Touch are the top 2 individual mobile devices on its network – this comes just before the company announced it has raised $27.5 million in funding.  We also covered an update to the company’s Android and iOS SDKs.
