Facebook released Facebook for Android 1.5.1, and along with a few bug fixes, the updated app introduces U.S users local deal support, including free offers, savings, and special deals. This feature is reportedly only available in the U.S for now, and requires users to check in to Facebook Places.
“To see if you have any local deals available, you need to check in to Facebook’s Places feature. The latest Facebook version also includes a number of bug fixes, and the changelog on the Market lists chat and push notifications as well, but those additions have been around for a while.”
Earlier versions of Facebook for Android also had the Places features, but its Places with Deals that have been stirring the buzz around Facebook’s mobile presence, especially as it steps on Foursquare and Groupon territory. This feature was originally launched on the website and iPhone app, and represents Facebook’s jumping aboard the coupon bandwagon.
The original release of Places came right before the introduction of a location-based search function, which Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced later on. Expanding discounts to the most popular mobile platform out there, this Android update was just a matter of time. International availability is probably not going to arrive anytime soon.
