Where is Amazon Web Services Inc. on its timeline for baking in more cloud-native services now that it’s joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, and when will we see related products?

AWS announced earlier this month that it was joining the CNCF as a top-tier “platinum” member. AWS is the last of the large cloud providers to join the CNCF, and the move is an explicit endorsement of open-source software Kubernetes. CNCF has been a prime force behind the open-source software originally developed by Google Inc.

“While it is good to see Amazon join the CNCF, it is not quite clear from Adrian Cockcroft’s post what this move means,” said Stu Miniman, an analyst with Wikibon, owned by the same company as SiliconANGLE Media. Questions remain whether Kubernetes will be a “first-class citizen inside AWS” or whether the company will revise its own container service, Miniman said. TheCUBE will be hoping to get more clarity from the company at the AWS Summit.

Sixty-three percent of responding companies were hosting Kubernetes on Amazon’s EC2 computing service, according to a recent survey. A report in The Information last month indicated that AWS is working on a Kubernetes-based cloud service.

AWS holds a 34 percent share of the public cloud infrastructure market, more than Microsoft Corp., Google and IBM Corp. combined, according to the latest research from Synergy Research Group. Despite continuing to be a market leader, cloud failed to save Amazon.com Inc.’s second-quarter earnings, which saw profit plunge 77 percent to $197 million or 40 cents a share.

Keynote speakers at the AWS Summit in New York City, include AWS executives Adrian Cockcroft, vice president of cloud architecture strategy, and Dr. Matt Wood, general manager of artificial intelligence.

Other keynote speakers include Claus Moldt, chief information officer at Fair Isaac Corp. (known as FICO); Rafael Soltanovich, vice president of software development at Hulu LLC; and Serkan Kutan, chief technology officer at Zocdoc Inc.
