Amazon’s Echo Show loses YouTube support in spat with Google
Google LLC and Amazon.com Inc. are in the middle of a minor spat that is unfortunately hitting users of Amazon’s Echo Show.
As of Tuesday, Echo Show users who attempted to access YouTube were instead greeted with a message saying “Currently, Google is not supporting Youtube on Echo Show.”
Echo Show is Amazon’s small, Alexa-enabled smart screen that combines all of the features of the Amazon Echo smart speaker with the ability to display pictures, web videos and other multimedia content. Until Tuesday, Echo Show had full YouTube support, but according to Amazon, Google suddenly pulled support from the device with no explanation.
“Google made a change today at around 3 p.m.,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. “As of this afternoon, Google has chosen to no longer make YouTube available on Echo Show, without explanation and without notification to customers. There is no technical reason for that decision, which is disappointing and hurts both of our customers.”
Although Amazon claims to have been blindsided by Google’s move, Google said its decision to pull YouTube from Echo Show should not have come as a surprise.
“We’ve been in negotiations with Amazon for a long time, working towards an agreement that provides great experiences for customers on both platforms,” Google responded in its own statement. “Amazon’s implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show violates our terms of service, creating a broken user experience. We hope to be able to reach an agreement and resolve these issues soon.”
Google did not elaborate on how exactly Echo Show violated its terms, but one possible explanation could be that the device has not kept up with new features that Google wants to implement on YouTube, such as the new Sponsorships subscription program it recently launched for YouTube Gaming. Of course, there is also the chance that Google may simply be looking for any excuse to take a swipe at Amazon’s Alexa devices, which directly compete with Google’s own Google Assistant devices, such as Google Home.
The loss of YouTube could be a serious blow to Echo Show, and users are already leaving frustrated reviews on the device’s Amazon store page. “I would give the show 4 stars IF it had YouTube again (wasn’t that one of the selling points???),” said one reviewer, who rated the Echo Show at two out of five stars.
“The drop in function is fantastic. But the lack of any useful skill and the absence of Skype, Netflix and now YouTube renders the Show a complete waste of time,” said another reviewer. “You’re better off getting a Dot or switching to the competitor’s model (yeah THAT one).”
Neither Amazon nor Google have said if or when YouTube support might return to Echo Show.
