Social networking was once the new kid on the block, but as it matured to become a multi-billion dollar industry, and spurred a few dozen new industries along the way. Personal cloud and storage took its place amongst these new services. The next big thing may just be personal cloud services -“Facebook is for your friends — Evernote is for you,” noted Evernote CEO Phil Libin; and the same can be said about every other personal cloud start-up / service we’re hearing about these days.
Box.net CEO Aaron Levie expects the personal cloud & storage industry will be worth tens of billions of dollars further down the road, and as it turns out, he took his notion to the next level. The collaboration service recently raised a whopping $48 million in a Series D round, and now TechCrunch reports it just launched a new product targeting the enterprise.
ECM Cloud Connect introduces a whole new approach to personal cloud & storage. Box.net partnered up with cloud storage and digital archiving company EntropyPost to create a bridge between on-premise enterprise content management systems and Box.net’s clouds, allowing users to sync data between any enterprise CMS and Box, and subsequently every device and platform the supports.
The personal cloud is one very crowded space, and Box.net is only one of the start-ups trying squeezing in. Springpad’s name is also on that list, and this morning the Evernote competitors updated its Android app. Version 2.1 addresses some user requests and comes with a series of new widgets – our News Editor Kristen Nicole interviewed Springpad CEO Jeff Janer about his company’s latest development.
The personal cloud and cloud storage are two very hot trends, and SiliconANGLE.tv has several interviews and highlights focusing on these areas. Steve Kenniston and Wikibon’s Dave Vellante discussed the outlook for cloud storage such as Amazon S3, Iron Mountain and Nirvanix for 2011. Nirvanix CEO later on set down with SiliconANGLE.tv on 2 occasions talking about his company’s growth and EMC, and the Storage Alchamist gave his take (again) of the storage market here (see below).
