Microsoft spreads the AI love with new video and audio transcription service

Microsoft Corp. is spreading some more artificial intelligence love to its products, announcing it will add automated video and audio transcription capabilities to OneDrive for Business.

The AI behind the service is currently available in Microsoft Stream, Microsoft’s corporate video-sharing service first featured at the Build Developer conference in May.

“While viewing a video or listening to an audio file, a full transcript (improving both accessibility and search) will show directly in our industry-leading viewer, which supports over 320 different file types,” Omar Shahine, partner director of program management for OneDrive and SharePoint, said in a blog post. “This will help you utilize your personal video and audio assets, as well as collaborate with others to produce your best work.”

Complementing the transcription feature is the use of Microsoft’s AI tech to search audio, video and images. In this case, Microsoft uses AI to identify the words and items in a given media file — for example, searching a folder of scanned receipts for receipts that mention sushi. With video and audio files, the aforementioned transcription service is tapped to search the audio or video for when a certain word or phrase is spoken.

Next on the list is an expansion of file insights, an AI-enabled feature rolled out earlier this year for Microsoft file cards that allow users to obtain statistics on any file stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. The file statistics will be available to native Office applications.

Last is what Microsoft is calling “intelligent sharing,” a new feature available later this year that allows users to share relevant content easily with meeting attendees. For instance, a user who has just presented a PowerPoint presentation will be able to share it with the other attendees once the meeting is over.

The sharing feature also extends to the OneDrive mobile app with the ability to share photos taken in a meeting based on attendees listed in an Outlook calendar.

“This type of real-world intelligence allows you to quickly keep everyone informed and move on to your next task and is exclusively available when you store your content in OneDrive and SharePoint,” Microsoft noted.
