What’s a bigger headache than choosing the right on-premises, private-cloud or public-cloud home for decades worth of applications? Managing different data backup and recovery solutions for all of them once they are settled is a solid contender. A single solution that consolidates and simplifies the process can keep the tears of frustration from falling.
Migrating workloads to multiple clouds is one of the most challenging tasks companies undertake these days, according to Vishal Kadakia (pictured), manager of data protection at NBCUniversal Inc.
“Once you get to the cloud, you have to really have a good plan,” Kadakia said. “Otherwise, your data’s going to be all over the place, you’re not going to know where it is, and managing that’s just going to become that much harder.”
A central management tool that consolidates backup management for all environments vastly simplifies operations, he added.
Kadakia spoke with Dave Vellante (@dvellante), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the Veritas Vision Solution Day event in New York City. They discussed the challenges of data backup and recovery for multicloud. (* Disclosure below.)
Despite the recent march of new contenders into the backup and recovery market, NBCUniversal has stuck with legacy vendor Veritas Technologies LLC since its NetBackup 3.1 version (it is now on 8.1.1). It relies on the Veritas CloudPoint management for multicloud backup.
“If you don’t have a central management tool like CloudPoint, which can manage your various cloud backups, then you’re left with managing each cloud on its own. [From] an operations stand point, that’s like a nightmare,” Kadakia said.
Veritas’ latest NetBackup 8.1.2 release has new features around microservices and containers (a virtualized method for running distributed applications). Based on his experiments with the new version, Kadakia approves of the upgrades, particularly the moving away from the Java console to web-based access.
