It seems like everything on the internet is not complete unless embedded with social elements (aka Facebook and Twitter). Today, Layar announced the 5.0 version of its open platform in mobile augmented reality, adding sharing capabilities to Facebook and Twitter for users to share their favorite screenshots to friends, as well as boosting interactivity with new animation capabilities. Icons and objects are now in 3D for richer event-driven interaction.
“This year we are continuing to look for more ways to bring augmented reality into people’s everyday lives,” said Raimo Van der Klein. “With today’s new version, we’re able to take a huge step closer towards that goal by giving users the chance to discover exciting new content and share cool layers and augmented screenshots with friends.”
Content navigation is also simplified based on previous users’ feedback. It was completely overhauled in fact. Personal experience, favorite and recently viewed layers are more user-friendly, with a four-tab navigation panel which comprises favorite layers, recent layers, categories/featured content, and settings. Users can go to their favorite and most recently visited layers for a head start. Layar runs on Android and iOS 4.0 and higher. You can download them off the App Store and Android market for free.
3D is going to be a big trend not only in games, movies and television models but in tablets as well. T-Mobile is already starting with LG Optimus Pad 3D Honeycomb tablet which will roll out soon. LG wants the distribution of this 3D tablets to be fast and massive so it’s already up on eBay before it even hit the T-Mobile stores. Also, white version LG Optimus 3D smartphones is expected to roll out soon and exclusivity of distribution was granted to Phones 4U.
