AWS to boost its presence in Asia with new Indonesia cloud region

Amazon Web Services Inc. is building a new cloud region in Indonesia’s capital city Jakarta as it looks to beef up its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

The public cloud computing giant revealed its plans Wednesday, saying the new facility will open in 2022 and encompass three availability zones. Each AWS availability zone offers redundancy within its specific region, plus its own power, cooling and physical security infrastructure.

The new region will be AWS’ first in Indonesia but its ninth overall in APAC, adding to existing facilities located in Beijing, Mumbai, Singapore and Sydney. Once it’s up and running, the Indonesia facility will extend the company’s global network of cloud regions to 25 in total, AWS Chief Evangelist Jeff Barr wrote in a blog post Wednesday.

Currently it operates 20 regions globally, broken down into 61 availability zones, but will add new regions in Bahrain, Hong Kong, Italy and South Africa in the next 12 months that will take it up to 24 in total.

According to Barr, the Jakarta region will allow Indonesian firms to leverage technologies that depend on extremely low latencies, such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, the “internet of things” and mobile services.

AWS is trying to encourage Indonesian firms to look in this direction ahead of time. As Barr mentioned in his post, the company is already working to educate developers in the company with programs such as AWS Activate and AWS Educate. Amazon is also working with dozens of accelerators, startups, business schools and universities in the country.

“Opening an AWS Region in Indonesia will support the country’s fast-growing startup ecosystem, large Indonesian enterprises, and government agencies by helping drive more technology jobs and businesses, boosting the local economy and enabling organizations across all verticals to lower costs, increase agility and improve flexibility,” said Peter DeSantis, AWS’ vice president of global infrastructure and customer support.
