Data governance specialist Collibra zeroes in on raft of new privacy regulations
Collibra Inc., which makes software that helps companies enforce the integrity and security of their data, today is launching a new product aimed at helping enterprises comply with two major privacy-related regulations: the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation and the soon-to-be-enacted California Consumer Privacy Act.
The data governance specialist, which has raised $234 million, including a $100 million round in January, sells a software platform that automatically classifies data and enforces rules on what users can do with it. With numerous countries and U.S. states either implementing or considering new privacy regulations, the company is targeting enterprises that are struggling to better understand the data they have and how it’s being used.
Collibra Privacy & Risk applies an organization’s privacy policies to live data and workflows. The product does not work with archival data. The software automatically extracts metadata from existing workflows and looks for commonalities in how it’s classified.
“We are combining the benefits of cataloging and tagging with the use of privacy policies,” said Upwan Chachra, senior director of privacy and risk at Collibra. “We learn how organizations are using workflows and provide suggestions on what a good starting point for compliance might be as well as highlight specific risks associated with transfers so customers can act in a timely manner.”
Organizations can use the software-as-a-service product to manage data privacy policies, create and maintain a data process activity register, perform data protection impact assessments and demonstrate compliance to regulators, the company said. They can also define specific events and triggers based upon the movement and sources of data. The software can track data expiration rules and alert information governance managers to data that’s about to become stale.
Collibra Privacy & Risk will be available in September with modules included for GDPR and CCPA, which takes effect next January. Collibra and its partners plan to provide templates for other privacy policies in the future. Pricing wasn’t specified.
