Pixel 4, Pixelbook 2 expected as Google schedules Oct. 15 product event

Google LLC today issued media invites for an Oct. 15 event in New York City where it’s expected to debut its next wave of consumer devices.

If recent rumors are any indication, the search giant will be unveiling the hotly anticipated Pixel 4 flagship smartphone along with at least a couple other products. Leakers have revealed over the last few months that the search giant is preparing an upgraded version of its homegrown Pixelbook laptop as well as a new Google Assistant smart speaker.

All signs point to the Pixel 4 being the star of the event. The phone has been the main focus of the Google hardware leakers as well as the subject of an unusual official preview that the company released in July.

Word has it that the Pixel 4 will come in two editions: a 5.7-inch model and a 6.3-inch version dubbed the Pixel XL 4 that is said to boast a significantly bigger battery. Other than that, the devices appear to be nearly identical. Specifications that have found their way to the press describe phone internals consisting of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with a 6-gigabyte RAM pool and up to 128 gigabytes of storage.

But the most noticeable improvements over last year’s models lie elsewhere. Google is said to have equipped both Pixel 4 models with a better rear camera and a snappy 90Hz display that will render graphics more smoothly. There’s also Project Soli, an officially confirmed radar sensor included in the phone chassis that will enable users to perform tasks such as snoozing alerts with remote hand gestures.

The new phone will likely be accompanied by the Pixelbook 2 laptop Google has been working on. Leaked specifications and photos suggest that the machine will sport a sharp 4K display with a 3840-pixel-by-2160-pixel resolution as well as 16 gigabytes of memory.

Then there’s the rumored successor to Google’s entry-level Home Mini smart speaker. The new model reportedly goes beyond its countertop and desktop roots with a built-in wall mount that will enable users to place the device at more locations throughout their homes, such as hallways. It’s also believed that Google has upgraded the device’s internal speaker array to provide better sound.
