Ripple Xpring launches new developer platform to make moving money easier

Ripple Labs Inc.’s investment subsidiary Xpring is moving into new territory today with the launch of the Xpring Platform, a new service designed to make moving money across the blockchain easier.

The Xpring Developer platform allows any developer to integrate payments into their application whether currencies or cryptocurrencies, the latter with initial support for Ripple XRP and Ethereum. The platform uses open-source technologies, open protocols and open networks complemented with developer tools, services and programs to build with XRP and the Interledger Protocol.

The new platform comes with the new Xpring software development kit that is designed to provide support for XRP/ILP in any programming language. Development tools include an XRP Network Explorer, a new XRP Ledger Devnet and a new Testnet for ILP.

Use cases include trading, micropayments for content and gaming. Ripple noted that the only restriction is the imagination of developers in coming up with ways to use the platform.

“Think of it like AWS but for payments – we’re taking open source and open standard technologies like the XRP Ledger and Interledger Protocol to make it dead simple to add payments into any app,” a spokesperson for Ripple told SiliconANGLE.

Ripple has found success with its Xpring ecosystem since launching more than a year ago. In that time, the company has partnered with over 20 companies and committed over $500 million in investments including $264 million into micropayments startup Coil Technologies Inc. in August.

“Through that experience, we discovered that the developer community needs more to bring the Internet of Value to life,” Ripple said in a statement. “We know that payments are hard – the networks are closed and siloed; the protocols are proprietary; and the traditional payment rails are antiquated and slow. However, while blockchain and cryptocurrency can be transformative for payments, building with these technologies is often difficult and creates a barrier to adoption.” The Xpring Developer Platform is designed to tackle those issues.

In addition to the new platform, Ripple also announced it has added new participants to the XRP developer community. Leading the list is Bitpay Inc., which is adding XRP support to its products, with BRD wallet, Anchorage and Chaninalysis also coming on board.
