Marking the end of an era, Apple Inc.’s Chief Design Officer Jony Ive has left the company after nearly 30 years.
Ive’s intended departure was announced in June as the legendary designer said he would leave to start a new design firm, though one with Apple as its first customer. Apple did not make a formal announcement that Ive has now left the “spaceship” of Apple Park, but it would appear that his last day may have been Wednesday, because his position was removed from the company’s leadership page.
“After nearly 30 years and countless projects, I am most proud of the lasting work we have done to create a design team, process and culture at Apple that is without peer,” Ive said in June. “Today it is stronger, more vibrant and more talented than at any point in Apple’s history.”
Ive joined Apple 1992 before being appointed by the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs as senior vice president of product design in 1997. Ive is directly credited with designing some of Apple’s most iconic products, including the iPod, the iMac, the iPhone, the iPad and the MacBook, as well as being involved in creating the design aesthetic of the iOS operating software.
Post-Apple, Ive is establishing the design firm “LoveForm” with Marc Newsom, the Australian designer who joined Apple in 2014 and is credited with designing the Apple Watch. The firm is said to be focused on designing wearable technology, healthcare and various “personal passions.” What those personal passions are was not specified, but Ive and Newsom co-designed a diamond ring that was sold for $256,260 at a charity auction held by Sotheby’s in December.
Ive has not been replaced at Apple. Evans Hankey, Apple’s vice president of industrial design, and Alan Dye, vice president of human interface design, are now responsible for Apple design decisions. Both will report directly report to Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.
