New Relic brings AIOps to the fore with new application monitoring tools

Application monitoring firm New Relic Inc. today debuted new artificial intelligence operations capabilities aimed at helping DevOps, network operations and site reliability engineering teams to identify and resolve problems with their information technology infrastructure more quickly.

The idea is to boost the capabilities of New Relic One, which is the company’s main “observability platform” for detecting problems with applications. It’s essentially a performance monitoring service that works in real time and enables DevOps teams to see deep inside their web applications and gain a full understanding of any performance issues.

New Relic AI is meant to complement the New Relic One platform by helping DevOps teams to detect, diagnose and resolve any software incidents that occur, even before their users realize. The company said that should be useful for many customers, who often find themselves being overwhelmed by hundreds of alerts sent from a range of fragmented IT tools. It’s a more serious problem than it sounds, asinceit means teams have no idea how to prioritize their responses to such incidents.

“AIOps will detect patterns a human would be unlikely to uncover, including those that reveal cause and effect. From this determination of causality, models should be created that will help decide which IT metrics should be mapped to which business objective,” said Gartner Inc. analyst Charley Rich. “Observe these over time to refine each model; ensure that it is up-to-date and that any assumptions it makes remain accurate. Through its usage of machine learning algorithms, AIOps specifically offers a mathematical way to find the hidden connections, causes and opportunities in the data that make this process possible.”

New Relic AI helps teams to understand which incidents need urgent attention by applying machine learning and AI to generate more information about those alerts, and by automating responses. The platform works by continuously monitoring telemetry data from applications to proactively search for any problems.

It allows users to ingest and analyze a range of data types, including alerts, logs, metrics and deployment events. That in turn adds more context to any incidents or alerts that appear, illustrating their effect on the user’s broader IT environment.

Meanwhile, noise is reduced considerably because New Relic AI helps correlate alerts, events and other incidents so DevOps teams understand which are the most critical. It will also suppress low-priority alerts that don’t require immediate action, the company said.

“Correlated incidents are enriched with context and automatically classified based on golden signals such as errors, saturation, traffic and latency,” the company said.

Not least, New Relic AI can integrate with popular workflow tools such as Slack, ServiceNow, OpsGenie and VictorOps, the company said. This deep integration helps to provide more context about any alerts relating to those platforms. It also helps New Relic AI suggest remediating actions via existing workflows.

“Our goal is to help reduce the toil and anxiety of running modern systems for engineering teams,” said Guy Fighel, New Relic’s general vice president and product general manager.

Constellation Research Inc. analyst Holger Mueller said recent advances in AI and machine learning mean that machines now have an opportunity to make the workplace a more “humane” experience.

“The opportunities do not stop at DevOps, but are actually multiplied, since DevOps operates on a lot of data, and that is the key ingredient for meaningful AI and ML,” Mueller said. “With AIOps, New Relic is taking a key step toward autonomous software operations, where software intelligently tests, releases and operates software itself.”
