Robotic lawyer startup DoNotPay Ltd. announced today it has raised $12 million in new funding to expand its business in the U.K.

The Series A round was led by Coatue and included Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund and Felicis Ventures, the latter having invested in the company through a seed round in July.

Founded in 2016, DoNotPay offers an automated lawyer chatbot app that challenges parking tickets, bank fees and unfair charges. Using artificial intelligence, the app discusses the circumstances of a parking ticket or other contested charge with users to ascertain the validity of a claim, then assists users through the process of lodging an appeal to the charge using publicly available information.

Since its founding, the company has expanded into broader consumer and legal services. Consumer services include a “free trial card” that allows people to sign up to services such as Netflix and the Wall Street Journal, then automatically cancels the subscription when the free period ends. The first use of DoNotPay’s services is free, followed by a charge of $3 per month for repeat users.

Talking to Legal Futures, founder Joshua Browder said that several of its legal services are only available in the U.S. but that he intended to take “everything that’s worked in the U.S. and expand it to the U.K.” DoNotPay was founded in the U.K. before moving to the U.S.

Separately, Browder told VentureBeat that during the COVID-19 pandemic requests have grown 50% month-on-month, with certain categories going through the roof.

“People have been desperate to get refunds from airlines; gyms have been shutting down and people are wanting to cancel,” Browder said. “Certain dispute categories, such as canceling gym memberships, have gone up by almost 30 times.”

Including the new funding, DoNotPay has raised $17.7 million to date. Previous investors include Index Ventures, Greylock Ventures and Tuesday Capital.
