Defense, healthcare and emergency services are three building blocks to successful societies. The needs for all three, as well as the way in which they are executed, have become more intricate. Thus, governments like the United States are leveraging cloud technologies from solutions providers like Amazon Web Services Inc. to keep these public sector areas at the cutting edge.

“The DoD and Air Force have a lot to be proud of in their transformation journey, and what they’re doing with Cloud One is a pretty substantial and amazing transformation for them,” said Dave Levy (pictured), vice president at Amazon Web Services Inc. “And then they’ve got 35 applications running on AWS. And so we think their progress is really good and they’re thinking the right way in terms of their software factories and other types of projects.” 

Levy spoke with John Furrier, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the AWS Summit Washington, DC event. They discussed AWS’ contributions toward the public sector’s digital transformation. (* Disclosure below.)

Meeting real people at points of real need

The defining purpose of government and its inherent agencies is to improve the lives of citizens. That’s why the fire department puts out fires, EMTs handle medical emergencies, and the police keep the streets safe. AWS, for its part, is seeing real progress in making these public sector roles more efficient and purposeful.

“We worked with the Small Business Administration to help expand the portal for the Paycheck Protection Program to get more lenders faster access. And that was a great project. They were able to respond really quickly, and we were able to support them in that,” Levy explained.

Clearly, the public sector impact that’s possible with cloud-based technologies is already being felt, he added.

On that same note, AWS announced the 10-year anniversary of its government security and compliance platform, GovCloud. Growing from strength to strength, the platform has enjoyed expansive patronage from federal customers, according to Levy.
