The working partnership between VMware Inc. and Amazon Web Services has borne many fruits over the years, including VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud, a regulatory and compliance maintenance solution.

“There’s strong alignment across the field with new go-to-market teams on both sides and a powerful resell agreement that enables AWS sellers to take VMware Cloud on AWS and all the associated VMware services, such as VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery and NSX vRealize Cloud Management, to their enterprise customers,” said Matt Morgan (pictured), VP, Cloud Infrastructure Business Group at VMware.

Morgan spoke with John Furrier, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent. They discussed the synergy between AWS and VMware, especially surrounding hybrid cloud solutions built on AWS’ GovCloud, and new ways to secure these infrastructures. (* Disclosure below.)

Security and scalability in the age of edge and multicloud

The key for enterprises to run secure, tight-knit operations, according to Morgan, is by exploring beyond conventional hybrid and multicloud operations and toward what the company calls distributed cloud.

“With our new announced local cloud capabilities, it’s leading to this whole new enterprise architecture, which we call the distributed cloud. When we look at deploying enterprise applications in a distributed cloud environment, the conversation starts with consistent networking and, also importantly, security,” Morgan said.

Furthering the security-focused strategy, the company also announced a new cloud service built specifically for local cloud-as-a-service use cases, tagged VMware Cloud on AWS Outpost. It allows organizations to deploy fully managed applications at the edge, overcoming the shortage of IT excellence that’s typical with conventional approaches, according to Morgan.

“VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts enables customers to deploy the same cloud instance as they’re running VMware Cloud on AWS but be able to do it out at that edge environment. Right now, we’re seeing interest, specifically in healthcare, manufacturing and equipment monitoring, government, higher education, where those endpoints are typically virtualized. There are others, but these are the big ones so far,” he said.
