What to expect at the ‘Women in Data Science’ conference: Join theCUBE Mar. 8

Tech companies continue to hire more men than women. This stark reality was highlighted in research conducted by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology. The group’s 2022 report found that tech women’s representation in new hires increased slightly to 31.7%.

The report also found that women comprised a disproportionate share of the post-pandemic “Great Resignation.” Women’s attrition rates were much higher than men’s and more than twice as many women technologists left their companies in 2022 than in 2021.

Statistics such as these make this year’s gathering of the ‘Women in Data Science’ conference on March 8 a timely event. During the conference, theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, will interview data science experts about empowerment through STEM, lessons learned from stories of personal success, and how diversity and inclusion are being promoted in the tech industry.

Closing the STEM gap

There are a number of programs that have sprouted over the past several years designed to accelerate opportunities for women interested in the technology field. TheCUBE’s coverage will highlight progress made by numerous initiatives to further inclusion and open new opportunities for women.

Accenture PLC began running the Women in Data Science accelerator program in 2019. The consulting company offers participants an opportunity to meet women involved in data science, along with workshops and lectures that focus on building confidence and providing information on career options.

“Aspire for Her” was launched in 2020 as a startup to bring more diversity into India’s workplace where the number of women in technology jobs dipped as low as 25% three years ago. The program is focused on connecting participants with professional women role models as mentors. The goal is to address the STEM skills gap that persists in many counties around the world.

“We like to celebrate all women and all their career paths,” said Madhura DasGupta Sinha, founder and chief executive officer of Aspire for Her, in an interview with SiliconANGLE. “STEM is a very important part of what we do, because we know that the STEM skills gap in India and globally is a very serious problem. If we train women and reskill women in STEM, they will automatically gravitate towards those roles which will open up in the India of tomorrow.”

Women of Web3

Nearly one year ago, Unstoppable Domains Inc. announced the launch of Unstoppable Women of Web3, a new diversity and education initiative. The group has experienced a busy year since, holding events at SXSW, Consensus 2022, NFT NYC, along with networking opportunities in Portugal, Singapore, Toronto, Paris, Miami and Las Vegas.

The initiative is being led by Sandy Carter, a former top executive at AWS and now senior vice president and channel chief at Unstoppable Domains. The Women of Web3 program highlights an opportunity for greater diversity in an expanding new field.

“This is a moment for Web 3.0 to be very inclusive,” said Carter, in an exclusive interview with SiliconANGLE during International Women’s Day, which coincided with last year’s WiDS event. “This space is moving so fast with so much new information. The more inclusive Web 3.0 is, the bigger the innovation and the bigger the power and the bigger that dream of ownership will become a reality. It’s a fascinating new model.”
