Dell and DISH Network collaborate to revolutionize 5G network

Choosing the right partner for cloud migration sets companies up for success. The infrastructure required to support it must also evolve as technology advances.

This fact is apparent in the recent partnership formed between Dell Technologies Inc. and DISH Network Corp. to build the nation’s first open Radio Access Network 5G edge infrastructure. DISH Network’s goal is to be able to connect everything, according to

Everything requires connectivity,” said Sidd Chenumolu (pictured, left), vice president of technology development at DISH Network. “It’s all about data monetization, and we want to be there in every aspect of it.”

Chenumolu and Song Bac Toh (pictured), senior director of product management for infrastructure automation at Dell, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin and David Nicholson at MWC 2023, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the future of 5G technology, as well as Dell and DISH Network’s partnership. (* Disclosure below.)

The future of 5G technology

The enterprise must deal with the challenges of scaling infrastructure to handle new technologies to support the high bandwidth and low latency requirements of applications. This includes applications such as 8K video and billions of connected devices, autonomous vehicles and sports stadiums. DISH and Dell are working to address this challenge with automation, which allows infrastructure to be scaled up or down as needed.

“You have to work with the leaders who have been serving enterprises forever, who know the enterprises’ pain, know all the problem statements,” Chenumolu said.

Although the partnership between DISH and Dell is still in the early stages, the two companies are already making progress in building a next-generation 5G network. DISH has already deployed a standalone 5G network in Las Vegas using open RAN technology, and the company plans to deploy a nationwide 5G network by this year. By working together, DISH and Dell are creating a more open, flexible and innovative wireless network that can help drive the growth of new applications and services in the market.

I feel that we always need to be ready to change, because the world, the market and all other factors will cause us to either change or really to change,” Toh said.

The innovation and partnership between the companies has positioned DISH as a major player in the 5G landscape. Leveraging Dell’s expertise in automation will allow it to create an advanced network that is also profitable for partners and beneficial to customers, Chenumolu concluded.

Radio access networks are server-intensive environments and as previously reported on SiliconANGLE, server are moving from compute-centric to connect-centric architectures. The implication is that silicon providers such as Broadcom, which delivers supporting components to connect the key elements of server architectures will increasingly be responsible for performance and efficiency gains in the compute market. In particular, consolidation of legacy systems into fewer physical boxes with much higher performance in aggregate will be supported in the future with innovations such as 100 gig Ethernet.
