AI leads the agenda as CNCF and Nvidia executives highlight need for Kubernetes in training models
Key leaders in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation or CNCF community picked up where they left off at last year’s KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe by focusing on the role of Kubernetes in artificial intelligence during keynote presentations today in Paris.
“Every segment was about AI and machine learning,” said Dustin Kirkland (pictured, left), analyst for theCUBE Research at theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during a discussion of the conference’s opening presentations. “The CNCF is trying to make sure that Kubernetes is the home for AI training and inferencing.”
Kirkland spoke with theCUBE Research analyst Rob Strechay (right), during KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe and they discussed key messages from the morning’s keynote remarks. (* Disclosure below.)
CNCF and cloud native play increased role in AI
The CNCF’s focus on AI was accompanied by this week’s release of the AI Working Group’s Cloud Native AI whitepaper, an overview of state-of-the-art AI/ML techniques and the evolving role of cloud native technologies in AI facilitation.
“People are just interested in AI, but there are a whole lot of pieces around that,” Strechay said. “How do you get the models to the data and the data to the models? I think we are going to see a lot around this.”
The keynotes included a brief presentation by representatives from Nvidia Corp. who discussed how their company is seeking to address the challenges of GPU utilization at a time when AI compute resources are both expensive and in short supply.
“Nvidia showed four different ways of sharing GPUs,” Kirkland noted. “There is an overall GPU shortage. There are also underutilized GPUs in clouds. We heard that concern this morning as well.”
Back in Silicon Valley, Nvidia was making news of its own at its annual GTC event. AI was the primary topic of discussion there as well, with the company highlighting its influence in the fast-moving AI world by the release of new GPU architecture called Blackwell. The event also featured a host of celebrities joining Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang for the announcements.
“AI has jumped the shark when you have A-listers like George Lucas going to the keynote with Jensen,” Strechay said.
