Oracle Database@AWS launches into general availability with new features

Oracle Corp. and Amazon Web Services Inc. today made Oracle Database@AWS, a joint database offering, generally available for customers.

The launch comes about eight months after the companies first previewed the offering. Their engineers have since added several new features that will ease tasks such as backing up business records.

Oracle Database@AWS is powered by the latest version of Oracle’s flagship database, which is known as the 23ai release. It includes a feature called AI Vector Search that makes it easier for artificial intelligence models to find information relevant to user queries. There are also performance optimizations, upgrades to the database’s SQL implementation and other improvements.

The database runs on Oracle-managed infrastructure inside AWS data centers. Customers can configure that infrastructure to use an Oracle technology called RAC, or Real Application Clusters. RAC provides high availability features designed to reduce the risk of downtime.

Customers also have access to Exadata appliances. Those are Oracle-developed systems that can power performance-optimized deployments of the company’s database. The newest appliances in the product line, which use Advanced Micro Devices Inc. silicon, can process some read queries with a latency of 14 microseconds. A microsecond corresponds to one millionth of a second.

Since Oracle Database@AWS launched in preview last December, the two tech giants have added a feature called Autonomous VM Clusters. It can split an Exadata machine into multiple virtual systems that are isolated from one another. Each such virtual environment can be configured with different cybersecurity settings.

The database’s infrastructure connects to customers’ AWS environments via private network links operated by Oracle. Administrators can manage their databases with the same AWS services they use to configure and monitor other cloud resources. 

“Oracle Database@AWS delivers a seamless experience, letting customers deploy and manage Oracle databases using familiar AWS tools like the Console, CLI, CloudFormation and CloudWatch for observability,” said Rob Strechay, managing director and principal analyst at theCUBE Research, SiliconANGLE’s sister market research firm. “With integrated backup and DR via Amazon S3, it fits naturally into AWS customers’ cloud operating models. Oracle’s multicloud strategy and native integrations make it easy for AWS users to tap into powerful Oracle technologies. I see this offering as potentially a true industry game-changer.”

The database includes a new Amazon S3 integration that wasn’t included in the preview edition. Previously, customers had to create custom ETL, or extract transform, load, workflows to move data between the two offerings. The new integration removes that requirement, which should speed up analytics and artificial intelligence projects.

Another enhancement allows Oracle Database@AWS to back up records automatically to Amazon S3. Customers can use a service called Amazon VPC Lattice to manage network connections to S3 and Redshift.

Oracle Database@AWS is available in AWS’ U.S. East and U.S. West regions, or data centers clusters, on launch. The cloud giant plans to roll out the offering to 20 more cloud regions in the future.
