Teleport puts developer Linux desktops under production access controls

Infrastructure identity company Teleport today extended its platform to Linux desktops, so the machines developers work on now fall under the same access controls the company applies to servers, databases and cloud accounts.

Windows desktops were already covered. Linux Desktop gets the same protected-resource designation inside the Teleport Infrastructure Identity Platform. Support goes live this month.

Engineers connect to Linux hosts running in cloud, on-premises and edge environments without opening a port. SSH keys no longer need to be distributed or rotated. Sessions run under the just-in-time access requests, live session monitoring and audit logging already built into the platform. Administrators can also apply device trust, which blocks any machine that has not been registered and cryptographically verified.

Desktops have been a gap in that model. Identity controls tend to get built out for production first, and the laptop where the code is written stays outside the audit trail. Because the infrastructure engineers build largely runs on Linux, Teleport said, a Linux desktop puts development and production in the same environment.

Most developers already work that way. Teleport said 78.5% of developers run Linux as a primary or secondary operating system, drawing on the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey. Ubuntu alone showed up in 27.7% of professional development environments.

Ev Kontsevoy, co-founder and chief executive of Teleport, said the addition brings production systems and the environments developers use daily “under a unified identity model.” Governing the machine an engineer works on every day the same way as the infrastructure it builds removes risk and hardens resiliency, he said ahead of the announcement. He tied the urgency to frontier AI models that can rapidly identify vulnerabilities for exploitation.

Linux desktops now join servers, Kubernetes, databases, web applications, Windows desktops, GitHub and Model Context Protocol servers on Teleport’s list of supported resource types. Cloud consoles for Amazon Web Services Inc., Google LLC and Microsoft Corp. are covered as well.

Teleport is a venture capital-backed startup that has raised $169 million across four rounds, including a round of $110 million in a valuation north of $1.1 billion in May 2022.

The company published the Teleport Agentic Identity Framework in January, applying the same identity model to AI agents. Credentials there are cryptographic and short-lived. Every action lands in the audit log.
