Zettaset Adds Hadoop Security Layer

Zettaset, a Hadoop startup that offers a self-healing data management platform which runs on top of the open-source big data muncher, unveiled its latest solution.  SHadoop is a new security layer that will supplement Hadoop Orchestrator by adding several vital elements that are not included in the base code.

For one, it leverages Kerberos authentication to more effectively management user access. This comes alongside role-based access enforced across both the Orchestrator interface and API, which caps the abilities of all users based on their permissions, and monitoring capabilities. Admins can track individual or group activity using a historical log.

Zettaset also revealed some info about what it plans to add to Shadoop in later versions. Encryption is the first priority: all the data flowing through the file system will be secured, as will communications between nodes.

”Hadoop is the best solution for handling big data and is constantly improving, but it hasn’t focused on security — which is why making Hadoop more secure is one of Zettaset’s top priorities,” said Brian Christian, Zettaset CTO. “We are bridging the gap between security and data management in a way that’s easily accessible to every enterprise and that doesn’t require expertise often associated with the implementation of Hadoop.”

Zettaset is addressing an issue that come up often in the cloud: security of remotely hosted data has been one of the major barriers blocking cloud adoption in the enterprise market, and to some extent, in the consumer space.

Meanwhile, the rest of the analytics ecosystem is also catching the Hadoop fever. Jaspersoft recently announced a partnership with Talend to offer its customers Hadoop support. Adoption among enterprises, as well as vendors, is rapidly accelerating as this industry continues to mature and develop.
