Dell Delivers Off-the-Shelf CDN to Network Providers

Dell is targeting network operators with a new offering called Dell Delivery, developed in collaboration with EdgeCast and Elemental Technologies.

The product is being pitched as a content delivery platform, targeting network operators that want an easy means of setting up a CDN service which they can then re-brand and offer to their own clients. Dell Delivery runs on 12th gen PowerEdge boxes and leverages software from two different partners. EdgeCast is providing some of its content delivery tech, which runs alongside software from Elemental – the latter focuses on boosting graphic processing in a parallel fashion, specifically the task of converting media to different formats.

“Until now, few content delivery models have been optimized for rich media, and it is hard to find existing technologies equipped to analyze and deliver content efficiently based on the requirements of a multitude of end-user devices,” said  Laurie Hutto-Hill, a general manager for Dell’s digital content group. “Dell Deliver offers flexible and scalable technology with significant cost advantages, allowing network providers to establish a healthy CDN that can support today’s ever-changing data landscape.”

Deliver will help Dell clients offer new services to their own users, and Dell itself has been bulking up its own line-up as well. The company’s big focus has been mainly on migration, an area where it expanded via the acquisition of Clerity earlier this month.

Clerity offers migration of apps and data from dated hardware to newer infrastructure – a process that often involves a lot of re-design and optimization. More notable, however, is that this buy is only one of several investments recently, including another acquisition and an earlier partnership with FalconStor: all three are meant to round out Dell’s business that, at the end of the day, is more than just supplying new hardware.
