Preempt brings multifactor authentication to traditional applications

Despite the fact that large-scale breaches are becoming an increasingly common occurrence, many enterprise applications still lack basic cyber protections such as multifactor authentication. Preempt Security Inc. wants to fill the gap.

The San Francisco-based startup is launching a new tool today that aims to help companies overcome one of the biggest barriers to implementing MFA: legacy code. A good portion of the unprotected workloads out there were created before the rise of modern authentication services, which means that adding them into the mix requires cost-prohibitive modifications. Preempt Any App removes the need to manually implement such integrations and instead allows companies to enforce access restrictions at the network level.

The tool relies on the startup’s flagship firewall to perform the heavy lifting. Preempt Any App employs the software to intercept login requests on their way to an application and ask for extra verification if they meet certain conditions.

Companies can tailor the rule set based on their workers’ usage patterns. An organization with a bring-your-own-device policy, for instance, could configure Preempt Any App to ask for additional verification if a user logs into an application from a new handset. It can also be set to trigger based on the location of the originating device and suspicious actions such as an attempt to access a service by a worker who has never used it before. The result is that suspicious requests are vetted while users who don’t raise any alarms may log in into their company’s software without any delay.

Companies can deploy Preempt Any App on a standalone basis or as an extension to the startup’s firewall. It’s priced according to how many users an organization wishes to cover and the number of servers on which the software is deployed.
