These are all the new iOS 11 features Apple announced for consumers and developers

Apple Inc. has announced its latest operating system for iPhone and iPad users, unveiling IOS 11 at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference currently underway in San Jose, California.

The developer preview of iOS 11 is available now for all iOS Developer Program members. A public beta will be available later this month.

In addition to the below iOS 11 features, Apple also announced new productivity features for iPad users to coincide with the launch of its new 10.5-inch iPad Pro and updated 12.9-inch model.

Here’s a look at the features for consumers, including updates for Siri, Maps and a redesigned App Store, as well as new features for developers, including ARKit and Core ML:

Features for consumers

New Siri features

Siri has received a few new features in iOS 11, including a more natural-sounding voice and a new visual interface that surfaces multiple results for your requests. Siri will also be able to translate phrases from English to Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

A new Accessibility feature allows you to enable “Type to Siri,” which will allow users to type a question for Siri rather than using voice commands.

Photos and camera updates

In the Camera app, Portrait Mode images can now be taken with optical image stabilization, True Tone flash and HDR. Live Photos includes new Loop and Bounce effects while Long Exposure can capture time and movement.

Pay friends with Apple Pay

With iOS 11 you will be able to use Apple Pay to send and receive money from your contacts via iMessage. All the money received will get paid to a user’s Apple Pay Cash account. That money can be sent to other people, used for purchases in stores, apps and on the web or a user can transfer the balance to their bank account.

Apple Pay Cash will only be available in the U.S. on the iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and later, iPad Pro, iPad 5th generation, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 and Apple Watch.

‘Do Not Disturb’ mode while driving

Once the feature is enabled, the iPhone will be able to automatically detect when a person is driver using Bluetooth or motion sensors and will silence all notifications to keep the screen dark. Users can send an auto reply to contacts listed in Favorites informing them that they are driving and can’t respond.

QR code support

QR codes aren’t as popular in the U.S. as other parts of the world, but the company has decided to add QR support in iOS 11. Users will no longer need to download a third-party app, the Camera app will automatically detect a QR code and respond accordingly.

Redesigned App Store and Podcasts app

The Apple Store has been redesigned with a similar look and feel of Apple Music. Since the launch of the App Store in 2008, more than 180 billion apps have been downloaded and Apple has paid over $70 billion to developers.

The redesigned store includes a Today tab that will feature new releases, popular apps, recommended tips and how-to guides. There are also dedicated tabs for Games, Apps and an Updates tab that will allow users to see what had changed in their favorite apps and games in the latest update.

One-handed keyboard

With iOS 11, the iPhone introduces a new one-sided keyboard. To enable the option, press down on the globe keyboard button and either move the keyboard to the left or the right of the device.

Customizable Control Center

During its keynote, Apple showcased the new single-page revamped Control Center, which is also customizable. Using the Settings app, users can select what is displayed in the Control Center and are able to choose from options including Low Power Mode, Notes, Text Size, Wallet, Screen Recording, Apple TV Remote controls and more.

Navigate indoor spaces

Apple has introduced indoor mapping to its Maps app in iOS 11. Users will be able to get detailed floor plans for some malls and airports, including specific vendors on each floor. While navigating on the road, users will be able to see speed limits in the Maps app, as well as lane guidance.

Features for developers

ARKit

The new ARKit will allow developers to bring high-quality augmented reality experiences to the iPhone and iPad. Using the iOS device’s built-in camera, processor and motion sensors, developers can build apps that use computer vision to identify surfaces and add 3D objects.

Core ML

Apple has introduced a programming framework called Core ML, which makes it easier for developers to run machine learning models on the iPhone and iPad. While this was possible in the past, COR ML makes it easier for apps to process data locally using machine learning without sending user information to the cloud.

As the framework is designed to optimize models for Apple’s mobile devices, it should reduce RAM use and power consumption.

Apple’s Core ML news follows Google Inc.’s announcement last month at its I/O developer conference that it is also working on bringing machine learning to mobile devices. Google launched TensorFlow Lite programming framework, which will make it easier for developers to build models that run on lower-powered Android devices.

According to a report last month, Apple is working on a dedicated artificial intelligence chip for the iPhone and other devices. Core ML could be the framework that developers will use with the dedicated chip.

SiriKit

In iOS 11, Apple has expanded support for SiriKit to more categories, including to-do lists, notes and reminders; banking for account transfers and balances; and apps that display QR codes.

MusicKit

Developers can now use MusicKit to integrate Apple Music features directly into their apps.
