Apple seeds iOS 11 developer beta 2: ‘Do Not Disturb While Driving’ mode, Control Center tweaks, lots of bug fixes
Apple Inc. introduced its latest operating system for iPhone and iPad users at its Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month. The company has now seeded the second beta of iOS 11 to developers, which includes a long list of bug fixes and issues, in addition to a few tweaks.
The second beta of iOS 11 is currently available only for developers and you will need to be registered with Apple’s Developer Program to get access. A public beta is expected at the end of the month (or next week) when the OS will likely be more stable.
If you previously downloaded the first beta, you can do an over-the-air update to upgrade your iOS device to iOS 11 beta 2. In the Settings app > General > Software Update > tap “Download and install.” Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi and a power outlet. If you held off downloading the first beta due to numerous bugs and battery issues, you can download the second beta from the Apple Developer Program website.
Here’s a look at the tweaks and updates discovered so far in iOS 11 developer beta 2:
Plenty of bug fixes
The main updates for iOS 11 developer beta 2 is an incredibly long list of bug fixes after plenty of issues were discovered in the first beta released at WWDC.
Bug fixes include Kindle Books and third-party keyboards that now work, fixes for Bluetooth and Carplay issues and plenty more. Developers will need to read the comprehensive release notes for the full list of all the fixes on the Apple Developer Program website.
IOS 11 developer beta 2 does introduce a list of new bugs and issues and is definitely not a stable version yet and should only be installed on a secondary device.
Disable “Show Recents” option in Dock
One of the main features introduced for iPad users in iOS 11 was a customizable Dock that is displayed at the bottom of the screen allowing users access to frequently used apps and documents.
In iOS 11 beta 2, users can change the Dock settings to disable the option of showing recently used apps on the Dock. To disable “Show Recents,” go to General > Multitasking.
With the “Show Recents” option disabled, only the apps that you have added to the Dock will display.
Do Not Disturb While Driving
During Apple’s keynote address at WWDC, the company introduced the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” mode for iPhone users. The safety feature, once enabled, will detect when an individual is driving using Bluetooth or motion sensors and will prevent any calls or notifications coming through. The feature is only disabled when the driver indicates they are no longer driving or they indicate that they are actually the passenger.
In the first beta, the feature wasn’t enabled yet, but this has been changed in beta 2. Users can enable it from the Control Center.
The new “Do Not Disturb While Driving” mode also gets new options in the Settings app where users will have the option to activate the mode automatically, which will use the motion of the car to activate the setting; the Bluetooth option will obviously activate the feature when the device is connected to the car’s Bluetooth; or the manual option, which will require users to manually enable the feature.
Another new option for the mode in Settings is the “Auto-Reply To” mode where users can select who should receive an auto-reply message if they contact them when the mode is enabled. Depending on the selection, users can then provide a specific message that will be sent to All Contacts or Favorites.
Control Center tweaks
At the WWDC, Apple also introduced a new single-page revamped Control Center, which is also customizable.
In the second beta, the company has introduced a new option that will allow users to disable the Control center within apps. This will prevent it from displaying if you swipe upwards when using an app. The Control Center will then be accessible only from the Home screen.
Experimental features in Safari
When users go to the Safari section in the Settings app, under Advanced they will have the option to turn on new experimental features. These include Constant Properties, CSS Spring Animations, WebGPU, Web Animations and more.
“Save to Files” option
The latest beta also includes a new “Save to Files” Share Sheet option, allowing users to save photos, documents and other files to a specific location in the Files app. The new option replaces “Add to iCloud Drive.”
Apple Music search options
Apple Music gets new search options, including the ability to search Apple Music or “Your Library.” In addition, search results are categorized with different icons.
Other updates
Other small tweaks include support for Hindi dictation, as well as a new blur animation when pulling down to access the Lock Screen/Notification Center.
