All the new features in iOS 11 developer beta 3
Apple Inc. has seeded the latest developer beta for iOS 11, which the company first introduced at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
IOS 11 developer beta 3 comes just two weeks after Apple released the first public beta of the latest operating system. Even though this is the third beta, the operating system still contains a variety of bugs, so developers should only install it on a secondary device.
If you downloaded the previous betas, you can do an over-the-air update to upgrade your iOS device to iOS 11 beta 3. In the Settings app > General > Software Update > tap “Download and install.” Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi and a power outlet. If you held off downloading the previous betas in anticipation of a more stable version, you can download the third beta from the Apple Developer Program website.
As is custom, the second public beta will likely land in the next few days and will probably contain the same changes listed below.
In addition to various bug fixes, here’s a look at the tweaks and updates discovered so far in iOS 11 developer beta 3:
Control Center
In iOS 11, Apple announced a new customizable Control Center. Users can select what is displayed in the new single-page Control Center from options including Low Power Mode, Notes, Text Size, Wallet, Screen Recording, Apple TV Remote controls and more.
As the Control Center is now a single page rather than the three we were previously used to, some of the toggle’s have been shrunk, together with a loss in some functionality. Apple has enhanced the usefulness of the toggle’s by adding additional menus accessed mainly through 3D Touch.
Screen Recording broadcast
In the Control Center, when you 3D Touch the Screen Recording button, there is a new “start a broadcast” option. Currently, the new feature works as a standard screen recording and will save the video to the device’s Camera Roll.
Wi-Fi
In the Control Center, when you 3D Touch the Wi-Fi button you will get an expanded networking menu, together with the current Wi-Fi network and the option to turn on a Personal Hotspot.
Camera
In the Control Center, when you 3D Touch the camera icon, there will be options to take a selfie, record a slo-mo or go the the regular camera app.
IPad App Switcher
Apple has focused strongly on iPad users in iOS 11 with a host of new productivity features. In iOS 11 developer beta 3, the swipe to close gesture has been restored when using the iPad App Switcher interface. Previously, iPad users had to hold down on an app and tap the “x” to close the app.
New TV providers
New TV providers, including Comcast, Cox, AT&T U-verse, Verizon Fios, Time Warner Cable and others, have been added to the TV Providers section of the Settings app.
All of the new TV providers seem to support Single Sign-On, which Apple rolled out in iOS 10.2 and allows users to sign in once on their Apple TV, iPhone and iPad and get access to their pay-TV subscription content.
To enable Single Sign-On, open the Settings app > TV Provider > select your provider > enter your username and password.
SOS feature
Apple’s SOS feature, which the company introduced in iOS 10.2 and will automatically contact emergency service’s if a user presses their iPhone’s power button five times, has been tweaked in iOS 11 developer beta 3 so when an SOS is canceled a notification is no longer sent.
Files app
The new Files app introduced in iOS 11 is a central hub for moving files around. In iOS 11 developer beta 3, OS X Server and Dropbox as been added as new Locations to the File app.
Single view of all notifications
In previous betas, the Notification Center required users to swipe once to see unread notifications and again to see any earlier notifications. In iOS 11 developer beta 3 the Notification Center has been simplified and now only requires one downward swipe to see all notifications.
Music app
The Music app has been tweaked slightly in iOS 11 developer beta 3. When a user is playing a song through the Music app, they can simply tap the song’s name in the Control to reopen the Music app.
Compass app
The Compass app makes more use of the iPhone’s built-in sensors in iOS 11 developer beta 3 to make it more usable as a compass and a makeshift level. The small crosshair in the compass dial will indicate how the phone is sitting relative to being completely flat.
Syncing iMessages to iCloud
The syncing feature has been tweaked slightly to show how many iMessages still need to be uploaded to iCloud.
