WOMEN IN TECH

LinkedIn software engineer stays motivated by mission-driven outcomes

Neha Jain (pictured), senior software engineer at LinkedIn Corp., was recently honored at the CloudNow Top 10 Women in Cloud Innovation awards as a prominent female technology professional responsible for data center migration during the acquisition of SlideShare. Jain explained that since her childhood, she had always been driven by a responsibility to deliver meaningful outcomes, which is why she left her first engineering job out of school to join SlideShare, a user-generated content-sharing platform.

“What I was doing [at my first job] was interesting work, but in terms of impact, it wasn’t very clear. So I’m sort of a person who’s driven more by results, by metrics or something like that. There should be something tangible that’s coming out of it that I can measure,” Jain said.

Jain spoke with Lisa Martin (@Luccazara), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the CloudNOW Top 10 Women in Cloud Innovation awards at the Google Campus in Mountain View, California. They discussed the history of impactful work by women in both Jain’s career and the progression of technology.

Building inclusive workforces

One of the event’s keynote speakers joined the technology industry when it was nearly 50 percent women, recalled Jain. Now, decades later, the situation has gotten worse and finding a solution is something that Jain takes to heart, she added.

“The thing that falls on us as a responsibility is to figure out why we would change direction for the worse,” Jain said.

After SlideShare was acquired by LinkedIn, Jain joined a team dedicated to empowering job seekers and creating economic opportunity for all. She felt a renewed sense of purpose in the initiatives specifically geared toward building a more diverse, inclusive workforce.

“In LinkedIn, we have the diversity, inclusion and belonging initiative. And we try to make these differences in real time,” Jain concluded.
