NAND support by Pure Storage is paying off for workload management

When Pure Storage Inc. announced over two years ago to support 3D NAND-designed flash storage in its products, the news did not draw a tremendous amount of attention. Yet the company’s decision is beginning to look like it could play a major role in fueling future growth as workload management becomes more critical in enterprise data sharing.

The distinctive stacking of memory cells using 3D NAND flash provides higher storage density at a lower cost and boosts data write performance. “That was a very important choice that they made, and it’s come out well for them,” said David Floyer (@dfloyer), co-host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio. “One of the things that really impresses me is their focus on sharing, which is the ability to share data for multiple workloads in one place. That’s an excellent technology.”

Floyer was joined by co-hosts Dave Vellante (@dvellante) and Lisa Martin (@LuccaZara) to analyze this week’s Pure Storage Accelerate event in San Francisco. They discussed customer feedback that emerged from interviews during the conference’s first day, as well as Pure’s support focus. (* Disclosure below.)

Seeking growth from a smaller position

Following a round of interviews during the conference’s first full day, the analysts were struck by the number of remarks that reflected poorly on other storage vendors. A lack of adequate support led a number of firms to move more business to Pure.

“They got kind of crummy service from some of their existing suppliers,” Vellante noted. “Pure has the luxury of being able to lose money, service like crazy those customers that might not be as profitable, and grow from its position as a smaller company.”

Repeat business also appears to be driving Pure’s recent growth, to the tune of more than 70 percent of its revenue. A net promoter score (metric of customer loyalty) in the high 70s also indicates that Pure is doing well in customer satisfaction, as the company remains independent despite continued acquisition speculation.

“The independence that Pure has currently is a selling factor for them,” Martin said. “Whether it’s Mercedes Formula One or the Department of Revenue in Mississippi, they all feel important; they all feel supported.”
